Will CBD Make You Fail a Drug Test?

Fail a drug test? Given the complicated legal history of cannabis products, it’s reasonable to wonder if CBD use may trigger a positive drug test.  There is a risk of testing positive for THC with certain products, those interested in CBD’s potential benefits must understand where the risk lies and what they can do about it.

CBD, while it will show up on a drug test, is typically not one of the compounds drug tests screen for.  Unlike THC, it lacks intoxicating properties and poses no concerns to employers. However, the trace presence of THC within full spectrum CBD products does carry some risk for a positive reading.

CBD oils derived from whole cannabis plants pose a family of potentially beneficial compounds, including a legal amount of THC, no higher than .3 percent. Because THC is fat soluble, it may be stored in the body and released into the bloodstream for days after use. Even though the amount of THC available in high-quality CBD products is minimal, one should exercise an abundance of caution if they believe they may be subject to a drug test.

If you are concerned about the possibility of testing positive for THC on a drug test, there are several precautions you can take:

First, you may speak with your employer’s HR department to inform them of your CBD use. If you provide them with information to show why you use the product, they should be able to acknowledge a medicinal need and account for it before your test.

You may opt for THC-free products ahead of your test. While full-spectrum products contain a host of cannabinoids including THC, there are broad-spectrum products and CBD isolates that remove the wider variety.

If you use CBD for aches and pains, remember that you can apply oils or creams topically. Dermal use doesn’t allow any compounds to enter the bloodstream, and research suggests that CBD may still provide local relief without ingestion or sublingual application.

The 2018 Farm Bill was a substantial step forward in the normalization of cannabis use, and companies across the U.S. are now reconsidering the way they drug test their employees. For the time being, however, it’s still wise to know how your employer views CBD and cannabis products in general.

If you want to see how you may benefit from CBD, but don’t want to use a full spectrum product, our THC-free oil will be available soon.
