Can CBD Get You High?

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the cannabis family of plants. This primarily originates from one of the most well-known members of the cannabis family, marijuana. Marijuana is known for its high THC, low CBD and for the psychoactive effects it has. This loose knowledge of marijuana leads to a plethora of questions when dealing with its cousin, hemp. 

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Relyf is, “Will your CBD oil get me high?” The short answer is, no, full spectrum, hemp-derived CBD oil with the legal limit of THC (.3%) cannot get a person high.  The intoxicating component in cannabis that is responsible for feeling high is THC, not CBD. Within the endocannabinoid system, there are CB1 and CB2 receptors.  When THC comes into contact with the CB1 receptor, it causes the intoxicating effects or “high.” On the other hand, when CBD comes into contact with the same receptor, it blocks THC from entering. Although technically psychoactive, CBD is not intoxicating.

The very small amounts of THC in a full spectrum CBD oil are not enough to create a high and when combined with higher levels of CBD, a high becomes impossible. While inhibiting THC, CBD also activates other receptors in our brains such as the adenosine receptor (controls fight or flight response), the vanilloid receptor (helps to regulate pain) and the serotonin receptor (regulates mood).  This means that the enhanced benefits of the cannabis plant can be taken without the high. Because CBD, the main active ingredient in Relyf, does not have intoxicating effects, there is no ‘high’ feeling at any point. That being said, if drug testing is a concern, there is a chance that full spectrum CBD oil will show on a drug test.
