Can You Take Too Much CBD?

When you begin to use CBD, you will most likely have some concerns about dosing. The goal of CBD use is to support the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and the therapeutic benefits follow. While mg per day dosing will differ across the board, every person has a “sweet spot” they aim to receive maximum effectiveness from their CBD products.

Is too much cannabidiol bad?

The use of phytocannabinoid-rich supplements is excellent for supporting the ECS; however, too much of a good thing is - well - not good. Although it would take a tremendous amount of CBD for it to reach a level of toxicity, if you are taking too much, you can lose therapeutic benefits and experience side effects.

Taking more than your specific dose will not be toxic, but it certainly will not be beneficial. So the focus should not be on taking a higher dose of your CBD tincture or CBD gummies, it should be on finding that perfect window of effectiveness for your body.

What level of CBD is toxic?

According to a study done in 2011 on the side effects of CBD use, you would need to consume nearly 20,000 milligrams of CBD in a very short amount of time in order for it to reach a level of toxicity.

It would be incredibly difficult to get this much CBD into your system so quickly, so there is little to no chance that you will take a toxic amount of CBD. To put that in perspective, that means you would have to drink 20 bottles of our 1000mg CBD oil in a small amount of time to achieve that toxicity. So in short, no you cannot achieve a CBD overdose accidentally.

How do I find the CBD sweet spot?

You want to find your specific dose for maximum therapeutic benefits. When it comes to finding the “sweet-spot” for dosing, more is not necessarily better. Here is where we have to address the enigma of the “bell-shaped response curve.”

This inverted U displays the amount of CBD adjacent to its efficacy. We consider “too much” to be when the amount you are taking has passed the curve of efficacy.

This is not dangerous, but it stops being therapeutic at this point. The curve of efficacy changes depending on if you are using a full-spectrum or isolate. The CBD bell curve diagram shows that the curve is more narrow for isolate, and full-spectrum has a broader area of efficacy.

This means the dosing isolate must be more specific, and unfortunately, there is little room for trial and error. Since the curve is broader for full-spectrum, this means that you have a little more grace for small changes in your dosing, whether that is more or less. You can see this visualized in the graphic below.

However, there is another way to figure out the perfect way to find CBD dosing effectiveness. Relyf offers a groundbreaking DNA Kit that can directly identify how much cannabinoids your body needs to achieve symptom relief.

Every person has unique genetics and lifestyle situations. So until now, we have been stuck with the “start slow and grow” method. Do you take 5 mg of CBD per day or 50 mg?

Well, now you can know for sure. Relyf has developed a personalized, user-friendly, accurate, validated summary of results, including recommended dosages and ratios of CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol THC for anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, and other conditions. Based on your genetic makeup, body weight, pre-existing conditions, and more. Using state-of-art DNA sequencing technologies with CLIA certified clinical geneticists, this is the most accurate test available for the analysis of genetic variations of the Endocannabinoid system.

What should my CBD dosage be?

The shortest answer to this question is to purchase a Relyf DNA Kit and know exactly what your dosage is. However, if you feel like you’re close to finding your perfect amount then we suggest allowing the process of figuring out your maximum efficacy dose to be gradual.

We recommend starting by taking 0.25mL in the morning and 0.25mL in the evening. Every two to four days, gently up the dosage until you feel it is at its maximum effect.

If you stop feeling the therapeutic benefits, try lowering your dose. You may find that over time, you may need to switch from a 500mg supplement to a 1000mg supplement or even 1500mg.

When you make the switch, start the dosing process where you left off with the lower dose bottle. Start with small doses first, then let your body acclimate, and gradually increase the dose until you have reached the maximum effect.

More CBD is not always better

In conclusion, yes, you can take too much CBD but it would take a willful, mindful attempt to take more. Will it kill you? Absolutely not, it will just simply not help. Remember, more does not necessarily mean better.

Cannabidiol is not a dietary supplement or a vitamin or a drug, it is something much more impactful for your body. While the federal government and the food and drug administration are still working on regulations for the hemp industry, always look for a high-quality CBD product with traceability and transparency.

This isn’t a product that will have drug safety studies like many products that are regulated on the market. However, the research is clear; CBD is safe for consumption.
